Hans Ulrich Obrist
Hans Ulrich Obrist (born May 21, 1968 in Weinfelden , Switzerland ) is a Swiss curator for contemporary art .
Live and act
After studying economics and politics, Hans Ulrich Obrist turned to contemporary art. He organized exhibitions in the Nietzsche House in Sils Maria and the Museum for Urban Drainage in Zurich. He curated a. a. Exhibitions in the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris , the Kunsthalle Wien , the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg and the New York PS1 . Obrist curated some of his early projects for the Vienna art initiative museum in progress , including around 1993 the legendary exhibition museum in progress on board with Alighiero Boetti on board Austrian Airlines , interventions in the daily newspaper Der Standard 1995, with Christian Marclay , Matt Mullican and others Lawrence Weiner , and Traveling Eye in the magazine profil 1995/1996, for example with John Baldessari , Nan Goldin , Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Gerhard Richter .
Obrist is also a member of the jury for the Eiserner Vorhang art project , which museum in progress has been implementing in the Vienna State Opera since 1998 with artists that change every year, such as David Hockney , Jeff Koons , Maria Lassnig , Rosemarie Trockel , Cy Twombly and Kara Walker . In 2005, together with Daniel Birnbaum and Gunnar B. Kvaran, he was curator of Uncertain States of America , a traveling exhibition from the CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson ( USA ) with stops at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, at Bard College in New York, the Serpentine Gallery in London and the Reykjavík Art Museum.
Obrist is the founder of the Robert Walser Museum and a member of the board of trustees of the Allianz Kulturstiftung . He is co-director of the Serpentine Gallery in London and the author of various works of art literature.
Obrist is involved in the “Interview Project”, an extensive collection of interviews between Obrist and artists, architects, filmmakers, scientists, philosophers and musicians. Some of the interviews have been published in Artforum magazine or in book form. Longer interviews were published in the Conversation Series , several of these books with interviews with John Baldessari , Zaha Hadid , Gerhard Richter , Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster , Yoko Ono , Robert Crumb and Rem Koolhaas have already appeared.
For 2010 and 2011, Obrist was ranked second in the list of the 100 most influential people in the art industry by Art Review magazine , and in 2009 he was the most influential person.
Obrist has been a founding member of the Academy of Arts in Cologne since October 2012 . Since 2016 he has been Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries in London .
