Daniel Birnbaum (born July 10, 1963 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish art historian and curator . From 2000 to 2010 he was rector of the State University of Fine Arts (Städelschule) in Frankfurt am Main . From November 1, 2010 to 2018, Birnbaum was director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Since the beginning of 2019 he has been the head of Acute Art in London. Acute Art deals with digital art and its communication. Birnbaum on his move: “I had the great privilege of running one of the best art schools, an exemplary museum for modern art and the most famous biennial. Live and act

Daniel Birnbaum studied art history , philosophy and literary studies at Stockholm University , Free University Berlin and Columbia University in New York . From 1989 to 1997 he was an art critic for the Swedish daily newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Expressen , as well as an editor and freelance curator. From 1996 to 1998 he worked as a lecturer in art theory at the University College of Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm. In 1998 Daniel Birnbaum received his doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of Stockholm University with a dissertation on Edmund Husserl .

After receiving his doctorate, Birnbaum took over the management of the Swedish International Artists Studio Program in Stockholm (IASPIS) until 2000 . He is the author of numerous articles in international art magazines such as Parkett , Artforum and Frieze. In addition, Birnbaum is engaged in scientific work and translations with Novalis , Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger , Gottlob Frege , Ludwig Wittgenstein , Jacques Derrida and Thomas Bernhard .

In 2000, Birnbaum became rector and successor to Kasper König at the Frankfurt Städelschule. He is also the director of the Portikus , a renowned exhibition hall that opened in 2006 after a renovation in new rooms on Frankfurt's Main Island . Birnbaum is giving up his management positions at the beginning of the 2010/2011 winter semester, but remains professor at the school. The convent elected the architect, curator and art theorist Nikolaus Hirsch as his successor . Birnbaum was director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Swedish national museum of modern art , from November 1, 2010 to 2018 .

Birnbaum has participated in various biennials , including in 2002 as a member of the international committee of the Manifesta Foundation , as co-curator of the Italian pavilion at the Venice Biennale and in 2005 as co-curator of the 1st Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art . Also in 2005 he was the curator of Uncertain States of America in collaboration with Hans-Ulrich Obrist . In 2009 he directed the 53rd Venice Biennale together with co-director Jochen Volz . Birnbaum is artistic advisor to the Vienna museum in progress . According to a study by the specialist journal Art Review 2009, Birnbaum is fourth on the list of the 100 most influential people in the industry. Birnbaum lives in Stockholm. In 2015 the German Academy for Language and Poetry elected him a member.
