Jochen Volz (* 1971 in Braunschweig ) is a German art historian and exhibition curator. Since May 2017 he has been director of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo , Brazil.

Life

From 1993 to 1999 Volz studied art history , communication sciences and education at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From January 1997 to February 2001 he was an assistant in the neugerriemschneider gallery in Berlin, where he oversaw exhibitions by Franz Ackermann , Olafur Eliasson , Isa Genzken , Tobias Rehberger , Wolfgang Tillmans and Rirkrit Tiravanija , among others .

From 2001 to 2004 Volz was appointed curator at the Portikus exhibition hall in Frankfurt am Main under the direction of Daniel Birnbaum . He has shown exhibitions by Peter Cook , Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Rirkrit Tiravanija , Gilbert & George , Simon Starling and Janet Cardiff, among others . From 2005 to 2012 he was curator and artistic director of the Instituto Inhothim in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais , Brazil . In this important private collection for international contemporary art in Brazil, he supervised the presentation of important works a. a. by Adriana Varejão , Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster , Doris Salcedo , Doug Aitken, Matthew Barney , Hélio Oiticica , Lygia Pape and Tunga .

In 2006, at the 27th São Paulo Biennale , Jochen Volz curated a special “homage” to Marcel Broodthaers as a guest curator with several artists, including the “Blind Room”, a mixed media installation by Haegue Yang . In 2007, Volz presented the Brazilian artist Cinthia Marcelle at the 9th Biennale for Contemporary Art in Lyon .

In 2009, Volz was, alongside Daniel Birnbaum, co-curator of the 53rd Venice Biennale with the title “Fare Mondi - Making Worlds” . In addition, Jochen Volz held the Heinz and Gisela Friederichs Endowed Professorship for Art and Architecture at the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main in 2009 .

In 2010 Jochen Volz took part in the Aichi Triennale in Nagoya. In 2011 he showed "The Spiral and the Square" at Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2011) and " Olafur Eliasson - Your Body of Work" as part of the 17th International Festival of Contemporary Art, SESC_Videobrasil, São Paulo .

From 2012 to 2015 Jochen Volz was Head of Programs at the Serpentine Galleries in London. In addition to the numerous presentations in the gallery, Jochen Volz curated the retrospective “Terra Komunal” in 2015 with works by Marina Abramovic at SESC Pompéia , São Paulo.

2016 Jochen Volz has the 32nd Biennial of São Paulo curated titled "Viva Incerteza / Live Uncertainty"; Co-curators were Júlia Rebouças, Gabi Ngcobo, Lars Bang Larsen and Sofía Olascoaga.

In 2017, Jochen Volz curated the Brazilian pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale with works by Cinthia Marcelle. The pavilion received the “Special Mention National Contribution” award.

Jochen Volz has been director of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo , Brazil, since May 2017 .
