Doris Salcedo (* 1958 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian sculptor and installation artist .

life and work

Doris Salcedo studied painting with Beatriz González and art history at the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogota . Salcedo received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogota in 1980 and his Master of Fine Arts from New York University in 1984 .

Her work is influenced by her life experiences in Colombia, by her personal history. She uses everyday objects such as wooden furniture, clothing, concrete, grass and rose petals in her installations. Salcedo's works are characterized by dealing with pain, trauma and loss. Members of her own family were Desaparecidos , and their work is concerned with the fact that while the death of a loved one can be mourned, their disappearance leaves an unbearable void.

"I'm a third world artist. Her artwork emerges from that perspective — from the perspective of the victim, from the perspective of the defeated ... What I'm trying to get out of these pieces is that element that is common in all of us. And in a situation of war, we all experience it in much the same way, either as victim or perpetrator. So I'm not narrating a particular story. I'm just addressing experiences. "
