The Kunsthalle Mainz is an exhibition center for contemporary art . It is located in the boiler and machine house planned by Eduard Kreyssig in 1887 in the Mainz customs port . The building was rebuilt in 2006 by the Mainz municipal utilities . The former energy center of the customs port has served as an art gallery since it opened on March 1, 2008.

history

The Berlin architectural office was commissioned by Günter Zamp Kelp to convert the boiler house . His design includes a complete renovation and rededication of the elongated, single-storey brick building as well as the closing of a narrow gap in which a tower 21 meters high and inclined by seven degrees is inserted. A distinctive urban accent has been created with the tower. The former engine shed is designed as a café. The Kunsthalle Mainz has 840 m² of exhibition space, divided into three adjoining large rooms in the old building and the three cabinet-like rooms in the tower (new building), one above the other.

Conception

The Kunsthalle Mainz shows changing exhibitions of current art. It makes a name for itself through monographic and thematic exhibitions of international standing. In addition, it offers a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary supporting program. For each exhibition there are communication formats in the form of tours or workshops, which are aimed at adults as well as children and young people. Additional events such as discussions, artist talks or series of lectures also take place. In addition, a screening room for films was set up in September 2012. A series of video screenings will take place there. Films by Joan Jonas , Pipilotti Rist , Anri Sala , Clemens von Wedemeyer , Matthew Barney , Martha Rosler , Maria Lassnig , John Bock and Francis Alÿs , among others, were presented.
