Rabih Mroué

Rabih Mroué (* 1967 in Beirut ) is a Lebanese performance artist , director , author and visual artist .

Life

Mroué grew up in proletarian conditions during the Lebanese civil war . His mother died as a militiaman on August 19, 1978 , and his grandfather was murdered. Mroué studied theater studies at the Lebanese University in Beirut . He has been active as a theater maker since 1990.

In his performances, Mroué mostly deals with the political situation in Lebanon and the Middle East and combines fictional texts and documents. His performances can be seen at international festivals and theaters, with The Pixelated Revolution he was represented at dOCUMENTA (13) around 2012 , his most recent work Ode to Joy from 2015 was shown at the Münchner Kammerspiele . In 2017 his performance "Sand in the Eyes" was performed in the "Wartburg" venue in the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden.

Honors

In 2011 Rabih Mroue, together with Lina Saneh, received the Jürgen Bansemer & Ute Nyssen Dramatist Prize for his theater texts.

Private

Mroué is editor of the two Lebanese magazines Kalamon and The Drama Review . He lives in Berlin with his wife Lina Saneh .
