Risto Saarinen

Risto Juhani Saarinen (born June 7, 1959 in Helsinki ) has been Professor of Ecumenical Theology at the University of Helsinki since 2001 and is also active in the church's ecumenical movement .

Life

Saarinen studied theology at the University of Helsinki, where he then worked as a research assistant from 1983 to 1994. He received the academic degrees of Dr. theol. (1988) and Dr. phil. (1994). Saarinen has been teaching ecumenical theology there since June 1989 and completed his habilitation for this subject in July 2001. Saarinen conducted research at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg from 1994 to 1999 (and was a visiting professor there from 2003 to 2007).

Risto Saarinen has been a full professor of ecumenical theology in Helsinki since 2001 and was vice dean of the theological faculty from 2004–2006 and on the university's science council in 2008/2009. In 2007/2008 Saarinen was a Fellow of the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies . In addition, Saarinen was involved in important positions in the Early Modern Thought network of the European Science Foundation and in the Churches and European Integration project . He is co-editor of various scientific journals and member of the advisory board (journals: Pro ecclesia , USA; Berlin Journal for Theology , Germany; New Journal for Systematic Theology and Philosophy of Religion , institutions: European Melanchthon Academy Bretten, Institute for European History , Research Center for International and Interdisciplinary Theology ) . Saarinen also belongs to the following societies: Scientific Society for Theology , Suomalainen Tiedekatemia (Finnish Academy of Sciences), Société Internationale pour l'Étude de la Philosophie Medievale , Luther Society . In 2015 he was elected to the Academia Europaea .

In 1985 Saarinen was ordained pastor of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church; he also holds various positions in church organizations, such as the Lutheran World Federation .

In addition to works in Finnish, Saarinen also writes in German and English. In addition to scientific publications, which often deal with the person and work of Luther, there are those of current internal church and ecumenical discussions. Saarinen has written articles on fundamental topics for the Theological Real Encyclopedia , Religion Past and Present , the Historical Dictionary of Philosophy and the Cambridge Dictionary of Christianity .
