Wade Guyton
Wade Guyton (* 1972 in Hammond , Indiana ) is an American conceptual artist , installation artist and painter who uses scanners and digital ink printers in the creation of his works of art .
Life
Guyton graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville , Tennessee with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995 and from Hunter College in New York City in 1998 . During his time at Hunter College, he worked as a security guard for the Dia Art Foundation in their showroom in Chelsea until 2004 . From his severance pay when Dia: Chelsea closed , he could afford to continue to have both a studio and an apartment in the East Village of New York.
Guyton's first drawings from around 2003 were black X-marks printed on torn sheets from design magazines and interior design catalogs from the 1960s. The black color and the letter X have been his trademarks ever since. However, Guyton does not work with a brush, but with inkjet printers after he has designed his abstract paintings on the computer and edited with Photoshop. In the first few years he printed his works on materials such as canvas, book pages, advertising pages or plywood. Since 2005 he has preferred canvases, which he then exhibits as series, as rectangles of the same size, standing vertically and at the same distance from one another.
Some critics see Guyton as a successor to the artists of appropriation art and a representative of modern art of the 21st century who uses digital technologies. B. with Tomma Abts or Mark Grotjahn .
