history

In 1918, the Hammond railway accident , one of the worst in US history, occurred near the city . In the rear-end collision, a locomotive drove unbraked into the end of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus train that had come to an unscheduled stop on the open line . 86 dead and 127 injured were the result.

City administration

Hammond City Council consists of a mayor assisted by a nine-member city council. Six of the councilors come from the six districts of the city, the other three are elected regardless of their district affiliation. The council usually meets on the second and fourth Monday of the month.

The current mayor is Thomas McDermott Jr. His father, Thomas McDermott Sr., held office from 1984 to 1992; however, McDermott Sr. is a Republican member while his son is a Democrat .
