Aaron Rosand (born March 15, 1927 in Hammond , Indiana , † July 9, 2019 in White Plains , New York ) was an American violinist and music teacher .

Career

Rosand took violin lessons from the age of three and made his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten with Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto . He then studied with Leon Sametini at the Chicago Musical College and with Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute of Music . From 1945 to 1947 he appeared as a member of the Army Special Services before American troops in the Pacific. After graduating from the Curtis Institute, he gave his debut concert in New York in 1948.

In his more than 70-year career, he has performed with numerous American, European and Asian symphony orchestras, such as the orchestras of New York, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Houston, London, Paris, Munich, Tokyo, Rome, Vienna and Brussels, the National Symphony Orchestra , the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks , the English Chamber Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra . He has also recorded more than 30 CDs of violin concertos, chamber music and violin solo compositions.

The focus of his repertoire was the music of the romantic era. Rosand celebrated his 75th birthday with a performance of Jean Sibelius ' Violin Concerto at Verizon Hall in Philadelphia. From 1958 he played a violin from 1741 from the workshop of Guarneri del Gesù , an instrument whose previous owner was Paul Kochanski . From 1981 he taught at the Curtis Institute. His students included u. a. Benjamin Bowman , Ray Chen , David Coucheron , David Gale , Roslyn Huang , Stephanie Jeong , Victor Zeyu Li , Asi Matathias and Stephen Waarts .
