The town

Street in the financial district of White Plains

White Plains is possibly the most important suburb to emerge outside of the New York City limits . The settlement dates back to the colonial period (the name is a translation of the Indian place name Quarropas , white plains ). Since the mid-1980s, it has seen a huge boom in commercial real estate and residential buildings.

Around 2000, many major companies that previously had their headquarters in New York City moved to White Plains. The construction of the White Plains Galleria Mall also helped spark a wave of construction in downtown and on Westchester Avenue (119 New York State), with a number of skyscrapers , department stores and apartment buildings .

This development has continued for the past decade and has become the retail and administrative focus of Westchester County. A new courthouse for the Southern Borough of New York opened in 1998. The influx of many migrants (mostly from Mexico ) as well as urban academics , who were attracted by the fast connection to Midtown Manhattan (30 minutes by express train), gives the city a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Although the cost of living is lower than New York City, White Plains and Westchester Counties are among the highest cost-of-living cities and counties in the United States due to their proximity to New York City.

White Plains is also the location of one of the six German schools in the USA, the German School New York .

USS White Plains

White Plains was the site of a battle in the US War of Independence , the Battle of White Plains on October 28, 1776. To commemorate this battle, two US Navy ships were christened on USS White Plains :
