Jonathan Larson

Jonathan Larson (born February 4, 1960 in White Plains , New York , † January 25, 1996 in New York City , New York) was an American composer and playwright .

Life

Jonathan Larson grew up in a Jewish family. After finishing school, Larson studied theater at Adelphi University , Garden City , New York State. During his studies, Larson began composing various pieces of music and musical works. Larson received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982. After that, Larson moved to Manhattan . In the years that followed, Larson worked as a waiter on weekends and spent the week composing and writing musicals.

His works included Sacrimmoralinority (with David Glenn Armstrong ) and Superbia , for which he received the Richard Rodgers Production Award . In 1991 he presented his work tick, tick… BOOM! finished. His most important work was the musical Rent , which only appeared in 1996. For this musical, Larson received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1996 and the 1996 Tony Award in the categories of Best Musical , Best Book , Best Score . In addition, the musical Rent received the Drama Desk Outstanding Musical Award and Drama Desk Outstanding Book Award in 1996. On January 25, 1996, the day of the premiere of Rents, Larson died of the causes of Marfan's syndrome through an aortic dissection .
