Garden City is a parish and part of the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York . The place was founded in 1869 by the multimillionaire Alexander Turney Stewart and is located on Long Island in east New York City .

The census carried out in 2000 put the population at 21,672. The place is mainly characterized by a rich or upscale community. Many families are descended from Italian and Irish ancestors.

Garden City is home to the former Roosevelt Field, from where Charles Lindbergh started the first solo crossing of the Atlantic in 1927. The airfield was closed in 1951. Today there is a shopping center there.

economy

From 1910 until it was sold to Bertelsmann-AG in the mid-1980s, the headquarters of Doubleday , one of the world's largest publishing houses , was in Garden City .

There are seven schools in Garden City: three pre-schools (Hemlock School, Homestead School and Locust School), two elementary schools (Stewart School and Stratford School), Garden City Secondary School (grades 6-8) and Garden City Secondary School (grades 9- 12). The preschools function as one large one with three different campuses. Garden City also has a private school ( Waldorf School of Garden City, grades n –12) and two Roman Catholic primary schools ( St. Joseph School and St. Anne’s School, grades n –8).

Garden City is also home to Adelphi University.
