Michael J. Badnarik (* 1. August 1954 in Hammond , Indiana ) is an American software - engineer and politician . He was the Libertarian Party's presidential candidate for the 2004 presidential election .

Badnarik won the Libertarian National Convention only in the third ballot against Aaron Russo . Richard Campagna was elected as his running mate as a candidate for the vice-presidency . In the presidential election Badnarik received 397,265 votes; this corresponded to a share of 0.32 percent and brought him fourth place behind George W. Bush , John Kerry and Ralph Nader .

In the 2006 House of Representatives election, Badnarik ran in the 10th Congressional constituency of Texas . He achieved a share of the vote of 4.3 percent.
