geography
The county is located in northwest Indiana on the south bank of Lake Michigan in the southeastern suburbs of Chicago . It has an area of 1622 square kilometers, of which 334 square kilometers are water bodies. Lake County is part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore , which extends across all three Indian counties on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Lake County was formed in 1837 from former parts of the then much larger Porter County . The newly formed County was named for its location on Lake Michigan (English: Lake Michigan ).

According to the 2010 census , Lake County had 496,005 people in 183,198 households. The population density was 385.1 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.67 people each in the 183,198 households.
