The county is located in northwest Indiana on the south bank of Lake Michigan in the southeastern suburbs of Chicago . It has an area of 1622 square kilometers, of which 334 square kilometers are water bodies. Lake County was formed in 1837 from former parts of the then much larger Porter County . The newly formed County was named for its location on Lake Michigan (English: Lake Michigan ).
