The county is located in northwest Indiana on the south bank of Lake Michigan in the southeastern suburbs of Chicago . It has an area of ​​1622 square kilometers, of which 334 square kilometers are water bodies. history

Lake County was formed in 1837 from former parts of the then much larger Porter County . The newly formed County was named for its location on Lake Michigan (English: Lake Michigan ).
