Fountain County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Covington .

The county is located in western Indiana, about 20 km from Illinois and has an area of 1,031 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tippecanoe Counties , Montgomery Counties , Parke Counties , Vermillion Counties , and Warren Counties .

history

Fountain County was formed on December 20, 1825 from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after Major James Fontaine of Kentucky , who excelled in the American Revolutionary War and was killed near Fort Wayne .

As of the 2000 census , Fountain County had 17,954 people in 7,041 households and 5,041 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.71 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.06 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7,041 households, 32.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers, and 28.4 percent were non-families. 24.8 percent were single households and 12.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.

26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 93.6 men.

The median income for a household in the 38,119 USD , and the median income for a family 43,330 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,957 versus $ 21,631 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,779. 6.2 percent of families and 8.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
