Floyd County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is New Albany .

The county is located in southern Indiana, borders Kentucky to the southwest, and covers an area of 384 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clark County , Jefferson County, Kentucky, Harrison County, and Washington County .
history
Floyd County was formed on January 2, 1819 from parts of Clark County and Harrison County. It was named after John Floyd a Colonel from Kentucky .

According to the 2000 census , Floyd County had 70,823 people in 27,511 households and 19,697 families. The population density was 185 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.23 percent white, 4.41 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.15 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 27,511 households, 34.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 55.4 percent were married couples living together, 12.4 percent were single mothers, and 28.4 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent were single households and 8.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 44,022 USD , and the median income for a family 52,401 USD. Males had a median income of $ 37,613 versus $ 26,539 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,852. 6.9 percent of families and 8.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
