The Monroe County is a county in the state of Indiana of the United States . The county seat is Bloomington .

The county is located in south central Indiana and has an area of 1,065 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Morgan County , Brown County , Jackson County , Lawrence County , Greene County, and Owen County .
history
Monroe County was formed on January 14, 1818 from parts of Orange County. It was named after the then incumbent US President James Monroe .

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had 120,563 people in 46,898 households and 24,715 families. The population density was 118 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.83 percent white, 3.00 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 3.37 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.86 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.85 percent of the population.
Of the 46,898 households, 24.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 41.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, and 47.3 percent were non-families. 32.4 percent were single households and 7.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
18.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 27.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 17.9 percent were between 45 and 64 and 9.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,311 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,058. Males had a median income of $ 34,062 versus $ 26,076 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,534. 7.1 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
