Rush County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Rushville .
geography
The county is located in southeast Indiana and has an area of 1,058 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Henry County , Fayette County , Franklin County , Decatur County , Shelby County, and Hancock County .
history
Rush County was formed as the original Free Territory County on December 31, 1821. It was named after Benjamin Rush , a doctor in the American Revolutionary War .

- Northeast of Rushville is the historic Smith Covered Bridge .
- The historic James F. Harcourt House is in Moscow . It was listed as a memorial by the NRHP in 1989 (NRHP ID 89001412).

As of the 2000 census , Rush County had 18,261 people in 6,923 households and 5,046 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.69 percent white, 0.60 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.50 percent of the population.
Of the 6,923 households, 34.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 60.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, and 27.1 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent were single households and 11.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.06.
26.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 22.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 93.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,152 USD , and the median income for a family 42,633 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,491 versus $ 22,101 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,997. 5.5 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
