Elkhart County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Goshen .

The county is located in the extreme north of Indiana, borders Michigan and has an area of ​​1,212 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: St. Joseph County, Michigan, LaGrange County , Noble County , Kosciusko County , Marshall County , St. Joseph County, and Cass County, Michigan.

Elkhart County was formed on January 29, 1830 from parts of Allen County and Cass County. It was named after the Elkhart River flowing nearby .

According to the 2000 census , Elkhart County's population was 182,791 people in 66,154 households and 47,630 families. The population density was 152 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.40 percent white, 5.23 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.92 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.78 percent were descended from two or more races.
