Jefferson County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Madison .
geography
The county is located in southwest Indiana, borders the Ohio River and thus Kentucky to the south and has an area of 940 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Ripley County , Switzerland County , Carroll County (Kentucky), Trimble County (Kentucky), Clark County , Scott County, and Jennings County .

history
Jefferson County was formed on November 23, 1810 from parts of Clark County and Dearborn County. It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third president of the USA.
Historical objects
- In Madison is the Madison Historic District . This Historic District comprises 1,666 buildings and was listed as a Historic Monument on May 25, 1973 by the National Register of Historic Places with the number 73000020. It is also listed on the National Historic Landmark .
- In Madison Historic District , there are some prominent buildings. These include the Charles L. Shrewsbury House (also known as Shrewsbury-Windle House ). The house was built in the mid-19th century and was listed on April 19, 1994 by the National Register of Historic Places and the National Historic Landmark as a historic monument with the number 94001190.
In addition to the Madison Historic District, Jefferson County has three other National Historic Landmarks , Eleutherian College , Lanier Mansion and Charles L. Shrewsbury House . A total of 11 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 2, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson County had 31,705 people in 12,148 households and 8,430 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.19 percent white, 1.45 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.59 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.05 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,148 households, 32.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 55.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, and 30.6 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.94.
24.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.6 percent between 18 and 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 95.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,189 USD , and the median income for a family 45,712 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,618 versus $ 22,033 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,412. 7.6 percent of families and 9.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
