Putnam County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Greencastle .
geography
The county is located in west central Indiana, about 70 km from Illinois and has an area of 1,250 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Montgomery County , Hendricks County , Morgan County , Owen County , Clay County, and Parke Counties .
history
Putnam County was formed on December 31, 1821 from parts of Owen County and Vigo County. It was officially registered on April 1, 1822. It was named after Israel Putnam , a general in the American War of Independence .
The seat of the county administration has been since the formation of Greencastle County, named after Greencastle in Pennsylvania, the birthplace of Ephraim Dukes, who donated the land to the building of the city.

According to the 2000 census, Putnam County had 36,019 people in 12,374 households and 9,119 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.87 percent white, 2.93 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.52 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.89 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.14 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,374 households, 34.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 62.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers, and 26.3 percent were non-families. 22.4 percent were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
23.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 13.2 percent between 18 and 24, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 108.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 108.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,882 USD , and the median income for a family 45,916 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,989 versus $ 22,029 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,163. 6.4 percent of families and 8.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
