Jasper County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Rensselaer .

The county is located in northwest Indiana, about 35 km to the west from Illinois , to the north about 50 km from Lake Michigan , and has an area of ​​1,454 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Porter County , LaPorte County , Starke County , Pulaski County , White County , Benton County , Newton County, and Lake County .

history

Jasper County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of Warren County and White County. It was named after Sergeant William Jasper , who was killed at the Battle of Savannah .

As of the 2000 census , Jasper County had 30,043 people in 10,686 households and 8,217 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.97 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.63 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.68 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.44 percent of the population.
