Montgomery County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Crawfordsville .

The county is located in western Indiana, about 60 km from Illinois and has an area of ​​1,309 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tippecanoe County , Clinton County , Boone County , Hendricks County , Putnam County , Parke County, and Fountain County .

Montgomery County was formed on December 21, 1822 from parts of Parke County and Putnam County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a major general and hero in the American War of Independence , who was killed on December 31, 1775 while taking the city ​​of Québec in the Battle of Québec .

The first white settler was William Offield from Tennessee , who settled here with his wife Jennie and a child in 1821.

The first county courthouse, a two-story log cabin, was completed in 1824. A second, built of stone, was created in 1833. The third Montgomery County Courthouse, still in use today, was completed in 1876.

Montgomery County has a National Historic Landmark , the General Lew Wallace Study . A total of 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 2, 2017).
