LaPorte County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is LaPorte .

The county is located in northern Indiana, borders Michigan , in the northwest on Lake Michigan and has an area of 1,588 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Berrien County, Michigan, St. Joseph County , Starke County , Jasper County, and Porter County .
history
LaPorte County was formed on January 9, 1832 from parts of St. Joseph County. The name of the county, French for “door” or “portal”, alludes to a natural clearing that connects two prairies .

According to the 2000 census , LaPorte County had 110,106 people in 41,050 households and 28,611 families. The population density was 71 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.26 percent white, 10.13 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.45 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 41,050 households, 31.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 53.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.7 percent were single mothers, and 30.3 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent were single households and 10.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.02.
24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 105.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 41.430 USD , the average income of families 49,872 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,686 versus $ 23,955 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,913. 8.7 percent of the population and 6.3 percent of families live below the poverty line.
