LaPorte County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is LaPorte .

The county is located in northern Indiana, borders Michigan , in the northwest on Lake Michigan and has an area of ​​1,588 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Berrien County, Michigan, St. Joseph County , Starke County , Jasper County, and Porter County .

history

LaPorte County was formed on January 9, 1832 from parts of St. Joseph County. The name of the county, French for “door” or “portal”, alludes to a natural clearing that connects two prairies .

According to the 2000 census , LaPorte County had 110,106 people in 41,050 households and 28,611 families. The population density was 71 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.26 percent white, 10.13 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.45 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
