Harrison County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Corydon , which was the capital of Indiana until 1825.

The county is located in southern Indiana, bordering Kentucky, and has an area of ​​1,261 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Washington County , Floyd County , in Kentucky: Jefferson County , Hardin County, and Meade County , Crawford County .

history

Harrison County was formed on October 11, 1808 from parts of Clark County and Knox County. It was named after William Henry Harrison , a general and first governor of the Indiana Territory.

The county saw the Battle of Corydon on July 9, 1863 during the Civil War .

As of the 2000 census , Harrison County had 34,325 people in 12,917 households and 9,713 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.38 percent white, 0.37 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.18 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races.
