Ripley County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Versailles .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Indiana, about 35 km from Ohio and Kentucky , and covers an area of 1,160 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Franklin County , Dearborn County , Ohio County , Switzerland County , Jefferson County , Jennings County, and Decatur County .
history
Ripley County was formed on December 27, 1816 from parts of Dearborn County and Jefferson County. It was named after Eleazer Wheelock Ripley , a hero in the British-American War .

As of the 2000 census , Ripley County had 26,523 people in 9,842 households and 7,273 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.30 percent white, 0.05 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian and 0.54 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.93 percent of the population.
Of the 9,842 households, 36.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 61.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, and 26.1 percent were non-families. 22.7 percent were single households and 10.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.13.
28.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years. 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94 men.
The median income for a household in the 41,426 USD , and the median income for a family 47,019 USD. Males had a median income of $ 34,055 versus $ 23,610 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,559. 6.3 percent of families and 7.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
