geography
The county is located in northwest Indiana in the southeast suburb of Chicago and borders Illinois to the west . It has an area of 1045 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water.
The northern boundary of the county is formed by the Kankakee River , one of the two headwaters of the Illinois River . In the south, the county is traversed by the Iroquois River, which flows northeast into the Kankakee River.

history
Newton County was formed as the original Free Territory County on February 7, 1835. It was named after John Newton , a sergeant in the American Revolutionary War .
