DeKalb County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Auburn .
geography
The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Indiana, borders Ohio to the east , is about 25 miles from Michigan in the north and has an area of 942 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Steuben County , Williams County, and Defiance Counties in Ohio, Allen County , Noble County, and LaGrange Counties .
history
DeKalb County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of Allen County and LaGrange County. It was named after Johann von Kalb (French form of name de Kalb ), a German-American general during the American Revolution who was fatally wounded at the Battle of Camden in South Carolina .
On May 1, 1837, the county seat was moved to the private residence of W. Park. In 1849 there were 50 timber houses and 300 residents in the county, and the first county court building was built. It burned down on February 8, 1913 and most of the county records were destroyed.
DeKalb County has a National Historic Landmark , the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum .

According to the 2000 census , DeKalb County had 40,285 people in 15,134 households and 10,911 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.76 percent white, 0.25 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.67 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.68 percent of the population.
Of the 15,134 households, 36.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 23.4 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.11.
28.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 44,909 USD , and the median income for a family 51,676 USD. Males had a median income of $ 37,322 versus $ 24,120 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,448. 3.7 percent of families and 5.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
