Pike County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Petersburg .

The county is located in southwest Indiana, about 35 km to the west from Illinois , to the south about 60 km from Kentucky , and has an area of 883 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Daviess County , Dubois County , Warrick County , Gibson County, and Knox County .
history
Pike County was formed on December 21, 1816 from parts of Gibson County and Perry County. It was named after Zebulon Pike , an explorer who discovered Pikes Peak .
Three buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 3, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Pike County had 12,837 people in 5,119 households and 3,680 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.10 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.39 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.58 percent of the population.
Of the 5,119 households, 30.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, and 28.1 percent were non-families. 24.9 percent were single households and 11.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.94.
23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years. 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 99.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 34,759 US dollars , the average income of families 41,420 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,967 versus $ 20,970 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,217. 5.1 percent of families and 8.0 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
