Jennings County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Vernon .

The county is located in southeast Indiana, about 25 miles from Kentucky and covers an area of 980 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Decatur County , Ripley County , Jefferson County , Scott County , Jackson County, and Bartholomew Counties .
history
Jennings County was formed on December 27, 1816 from parts of Jackson County and Jefferson County. It was named after Jonathan Jennings , the first governor of Indiana.

As of the 2000 census , Jennings County had 27,554 people in 10,134 households and 7,600 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.45 percent white, 0.75 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.70 percent of the population.
Of the 10,134 households, 36.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 60.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers, and 25.0 percent were non-families. 20.6 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.07.
27.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 30.4 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,402 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,519. Males had a median income of $ 30,377 versus $ 21,023 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,059. 6.0 percent of families and 9.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
