White County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Monticello .

The county is located in central northwest Indiana and has an area of ​​1,318 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pulaski County , Cass County , Carroll County , Tippecanoe County , Benton County, and Jasper County .

history

White County was formed on February 1, 1834 from parts of Carroll County. It was named after Isaac White , a colonel and hero, killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe .

As of the 2000 census , White County had 25,267 people in 9,727 households and 7,090 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.20 percent white, 0.16 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.92 percent were descended from two or more races.
