White County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Monticello .

The county is located in central northwest Indiana and has an area of 1,318 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pulaski County , Cass County , Carroll County , Tippecanoe County , Benton County, and Jasper County .
history
White County was formed on February 1, 1834 from parts of Carroll County. It was named after Isaac White , a colonel and hero, killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe .

As of the 2000 census , White County had 25,267 people in 9,727 households and 7,090 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.20 percent white, 0.16 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.92 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.34 percent of the population.
Of the 9,727 households, 32.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 60.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, and 27.1 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 93.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 40,707 USD , and the median income for a family 46,436 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,232 versus $ 21,431 women. The per capita income was $ 18,323. 4.3 percent of families and 7.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
