Whitley County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Columbia City .
geography
The county is located in northeast Indiana and has an area of 875 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Noble County , Allen County , Huntington County , Wabash County, and Kosciusko Counties .
history
Whitley County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of Allen County and Elkhart County. It was named after William Whitley , a colonel in the American Revolutionary War .
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 5, 2017).

Demographic data
According to the 2000 census , Whitley County had 30,707 people in 11,711 households and 8,607 families. The population density was 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.37 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.30 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.90 percent of the population.
Of the 11,711 households, 34.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 61.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, and 26.5 percent were non-families. 22.4 percent were single households and 9.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.03.
26.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96 men.
The median income for a household in the 45,503 USD , and the median income for a family 52,872 USD. Males had a median income of $ 37,325 versus $ 23,420 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,519. 3.3 percent of families and 4.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
