Blackford County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Hartford City .

The county is located in northeast Indiana, about 50 km to the east from Ohio , and covers an area of 428 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Wells County , Jay County , Delaware County, and Grant County .
history
Blackford County was formed on February 15, 1838 from parts of Jay County. It was named after Isaac Blackford , speaker of the first Indiana General Assembly.

As of the 2000 census , Blackford County had 14,048 people in 5,690 households and 4,028 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.40 percent white, 0.12 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.83 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.59 percent of the population.
Of the 5,690 households, 30.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, and 29.2 percent were non-families. 25.9 percent were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 34,760 USD , and the median income for a family 41,758 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,172 versus $ 21,386 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,543. 6.0 percent of families and 8.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
