Huntington County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Huntington .

The county is located in northeast Indiana and has an area of 1005 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Whitley County , Allen County , Wells County , Grant County, and Wabash County .

history

Huntington County was formed on February 2, 1832 from parts of Allen County and Grant County. It was named after Samuel Huntington , President of the Continental Congress of the Thirteen Colonies of North America.

According to the 2000 census , Huntington County had 38,075 people in 14,242 households and 10,282 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.15 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.95 percent of the population.

Of the 14,242 households, 34.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.1 percent were single mothers, and 27.8 percent were non-families. 23.6 percent were single households and 9.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.04.

26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.9 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 21.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.7 men.

The median income for a household in the 41,620 USD , and the median income for a family 49,031 USD. Males had a median income of $ 34,894 versus $ 21,693 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,480. 3.7 percent of families and 5.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
