LaGrange County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is LaGrange .

The county is located in northeast Indiana, borders Michigan and has an area of ​​1002 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: St. Joseph Counties and Michigan Branch Counties , Steuben Counties , Noble Counties , and Elkhart Counties .

history

LaGrange County was formed on February 2, 1832 from parts of Allen County and Elkhart County. It was named after the French homeland of General La Fayette , who fought on the side of the Americans in the American War of Independence .

As of the 2000 census , LaGrange County had 34,909 people in 11,225 households and 8,856 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.74 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian and 1.92 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.14 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 11,225 households, 40.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 68.2 percent were married couples living together, 6.9 percent were single mothers, and 21.1 percent were non-families. 18.0 percent were single households and 7.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.54.

33.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 and 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44 years. 19.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.6 men.

The median income for a household in the 42,848 USD , and the median income for a family 46,885 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,872 versus $ 23,395 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,481. 5.4 percent of families and 7.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
