Morgan County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Martinsville .
geography
The county is located slightly southwest of the geographic center of Indiana and has an area of 1,060 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hendricks County , Marion County , Johnson County , Brown County , Monroe County , Owen County, and Putnam Counties .
history
Morgan County was formed as the original Free Territory County on December 31, 1821. It was named after Daniel Morgan , a general in the American Revolutionary War .
Historical objects
In 1950 the now historic Mill Street Bridge was built. Another historic bridge, the White Lick Creek Bridge , was built in 1935. It was replaced by a new one in 1995.
Martinsville is home to the historic Martinsville Sanitarium . The building is at 239 West Harrison Street . A total of 27 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 2, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Morgan County had 66,689 people in 24,437 households and 19,036 families. The population density was 63 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.59 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.73 percent of the population.
Of the 24,437 households, 36.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 65.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers, and 22.1 percent were non-families. 18.4 percent were single households and 7.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.06.
27.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 30.6 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 47,739 US dollars , the average income of families 52,851 USD. Males had a median income of $ 39,701 versus $ 26,311 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,657. 5.3 percent of families and 6.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
