Shelby County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Shelbyville .

The neighboring counties (starting in the north, clockwise) are: Hancock County , Rush County , Decatur County , Bartholomew County , Johnson County, and Marion County . Shelby County covers an area of 1,070 square kilometers.
history
Shelby County was formed from parts of Delaware County in 1821 and recognized on April 1, 1822. It was named after General Isaac Shelby , who defeated the British Army at the Battle of Kings Mountain in the American Revolutionary War . He then became governor of Kentucky . In the British-American War of 1812 he led the troops from Kentucky to Canada, where he again defeated the British Army in the Battle of the Thames River .
The county was divided into 14 townships: Addison, Brandywine, Hanover, Hendricks, Jackson, Liberty, Marion, Moral, Noble, Shelby, Sugar Creek, Union, Van Buren, and Washington.
