Dubois County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Jasper .

The county is located in southwest Indiana, about 45 km south of Kentucky , and has an area of 1,127 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Martin County , Orange County , Crawford County , Perry County , Spencer County , Warrick County , Pike County, and Daviess County .

history

Dubois County was formed on December 20, 1817 from parts of Pike County. It was named after Toussaint Dubois , a captain in the War of 1812 and the Battle of Tippecanoe .

According to the 2000 census , Dubois County had 39,674 people in 14,813 households and 10,739 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.54 percent white, 0.14 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.47 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 14,813 households, 37.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 61.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.4 percent were single mothers, and 27.5 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.13.

27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years. 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.3 men.
