history
The first settlers in the area of the later Jasper came mainly from Kentucky and Tennessee . The settlement formed on the Patoka River , which served as a transport route and powered a flour mill. Until the elevation to the county seat in 1830, the place was still known as "Enlow's Hill". By 1838 Jasper had about 60 residents. Many of the residents who joined in the following years originally came from what is now Germany, primarily from Baden and Bavaria .
The participation of German immigrants in the historical development of Jasper is expressed today in a town partnership with Pfaffenweiler in Baden-Württemberg .
