The Patoka River has its source in Orange County , southern Indiana. It flows in a predominantly westerly direction and has a strongly meandering behavior. North of Oakland City , Columbia Mine Preserve is on the south bank of the river. The river has been channeled and straightened in places. The Patoka River passes the village of Patoka and finally flows into the Wabash River opposite the small town of Mount Carmel . The confluence of the White River with the Wabash River is only 2 km upstream. Established in 1994, the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area consists of several protected areas that lie along the course of the Patoka River.
