Mining rig

A mining rig is a computer or an electronic data processing system for calculating hash values for certain cryptocurrencies .

A commercially available personal computer can be used as the mining rig , which, depending on the mining method (see e.g. mining of bitcoins ), has been expanded by several powerful global processing units or graphics cards . These graphics cards are not used for graphic output, but the shader units on them are used to calculate hash values.

In the past, the operation of mining rigs resulted in a strong increase in sales for graphics cards, as a result of which the stock market prices of Nvidia and AMD were able to record strong gains in some cases.

Since 2011, however, there has been special hardware for mining bitcoins that are even more efficient than graphics cards (in relation to power consumption) for mining bitcoins. At first these were FPGA- based add-on cards. Since 2013 there have been ASIC boards that have been designed exclusively for mining bitcoins and have made all other mining methods inefficient in a short time. The PC then only serves to control this hardware and to communicate with the outside world.
