The White River (English for "white river"; above the confluence of the East Fork White River called West Fork White River ) is a left tributary of the Wabash in the US state of Indiana . It has a length of 583 km. Its catchment area covers an area of ​​29,381 km². About half of this is in the East Fork White River . The mean discharge at the Hazleton gauge about 30 km above the estuary is 434 m³ / s.

The White River has its source in Randolph County . It initially flows west through the towns of Winchester , Muncie and Anderson . At Noblesville it turns to the southwest and later to the south. It flows through the city of Indianapolis . It takes up the Eel River from the right . In the lower reaches, the East Fork White River, the most important tributary, meets the White River from the left. Then, for the last 80 kilometers, the White River flows southwest and flows into the Wabash River at Mount Carmel .

The river system is polluted by the extensive use of pesticides in the catchment area and by unexplained discharges with nitrates and nutrients.
