concept

The Haus Spilles youth center is established

In 1974 the initiative group “Youth in Benrath e. V. “to the youth welfare office and the public. He pointed out the leisure problems of many Benrath children and adolescents and called for the creation of a self-administered youth center. A needs analysis by the youth welfare office showed that the creation of a youth center in Benrath is to be regarded as urgent. With the building decision on November 8, 1979 and a grant from Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf for the renovation of 1.6 million DM, construction work began in 1981. In June 1983 the youth center started operations.

Self-management

In contrast to other youth centers, Haus Spilles is not dependent on a large sponsor but is self-governing. With this concept, the house is unique in NRW. The Spilles is not subject to the classic hierarchy in which a carrier tells the employees which offers and goals should be implemented. Self-management is a more dynamic concept, which is primarily intended to promote the participation of the individual. Young people, mostly from the visitors who want to get involved in the house, come with their ideas to a volunteer council and present them or volunteer in the house. They are supported by the board of directors and the employees. The board of directors is determined by the volunteers at a meeting of the sponsoring association and takes on controlling tasks in-house.

offer

The youth center has a wide range of offers for young people aged 10 and over. The house separates the pedagogically supervised area for young people between 10 and 16 years of age and the voluntary evening area for young people aged 16 and over. Haus Spilles also offers various other events such as the annual open air, cultural events, an annual summer festival for families and many others on.

Teens Club

The Teens Club is an educationally supervised area for young people between the ages of 10 and 16 that is implemented by the staff of the youth center. The young people have options such as table football, billiards, table tennis, basketball, board games and many more. The house also offers an internet café for young people. Visitors to the Teens Club can help shape the Teens Club in the regular youth forum.

Voluntary youth work

Through its self-administration, Haus Spilles offers a free platform for young people from the age of 16 through which various events can be organized. Various teams and series of events have been created since the establishment of the house. This includes themed parties, concerts, literary and cultural events. The concerts in particular have been a permanent part of the Düsseldorf music scene for years, and local bands are supported. These usually take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturday and offer different styles of music from rock music , reggae , ska , metal to rap and jazz . With the “SlamRath” series, a regular poetry slam also takes place in Benrath in cooperation with the Benrath Castle Foundation . In addition to the larger evening events, there are also smaller so-called “cafés” where the focus is on meeting and exchanging young people under a specific motto.

The planning and implementation of each individual event is carried out on a voluntary basis.

Spilles Open Air / Spilles under the sun

Every year in September there is an open air concert in the backyard of the Spilles. Depending on the size of the event, a distinction is made between the smaller stage structure of the “Spilles under the sun” and the “Spilles Open Air”. Usually local bands from different genres usually perform. The realization of the larger open air depends on donations from companies in Düsseldorf. The 10th big Spilles Open Air took place in 2016.

summer party

Once a year Haus Spilles organizes a summer party as an offer for families, which is also aimed at younger children. A large number of varying stands are set up in the courtyard of the house, e.g. B. face painting, bouncy castles, archery, can throwing and creative offers (painting of cloth bags or mandalas). In addition, the summer festival is often accompanied by a magic show for children.

Premises

The youth center consists of 2 buildings connected by a passage. In addition to the main building, the former post office, this includes the newly built café building. The café offers space for readings, parties, cafés and concerts over 3 levels. The main building contains the office of the youth center, an internet café, a consultation room, a sound studio (consisting of a recording room and a technical room), a kitchen, a sports room, a mirror room (for theater / dance offers) and a workshop. In addition, the volunteers have an IT room and another room as a place of retreat.

Further

Thanks to the self-administered organization in the house, many other events and activities have arisen in the house. One example of this are the meeting cafés in cooperation with Benrath refugee accommodation, which provide a forum for getting to know each other and exchanging ideas. Events to support the Red Hand campaign were also held. The house also supports local associations and initiatives with rooms to B. to offer senior meetings, dance groups and meditation workshops.
