history

The Düsseldorf town hall: In 1848 the Sparkasse moved to the ground floor of the right wing next to the town hall tower

The first file on the planning of a lending agency in Düsseldorf dates back to October 1806. In the summer of 1825 the time had come: the mayor's office announced that the "Leih-Haus and Spar-kasse" would open. In 1848 the loan house and the savings bank were separated. At that time, a purely social orientation was set. As early as 1872, the savings bank's total assets reached the million mark. In 1877 the Sparkasse became a communal credit institute and the principle of purely social orientation no longer applies.

The Second World War also shook the Sparkasse in Düsseldorf. After the war, almost half of all residential buildings and a third of all industrial facilities were destroyed, the branch network was on the ground and is only slowly being rebuilt.

In 1956, Sparkasse Düsseldorf bought the almost 5,000 square meter property on Berliner Allee and established its main office there. The skyscraper, which was completely renovated in 2000, is still home to the main office of the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf today.

On November 22nd, 1969, the Sparkasse clock was hoisted onto the roof of the Sparkasse tower with a special crane.

In 1956 the Savings Banks Act is passed, which defines the Sparkasse as an institution under public law. So it is their main task to promote the local economy and the local credit supply.

At the end of 1969 the Sparkasse clock was put on the Sparkasse tower. With a diameter of nine meters, a weight of 28 tons, an area of 64 square meters and a total height of 14 meters, it will be Düsseldorf's largest clock and, until 1998, a distinctive landmark in the city center.

On July 1, 2002, the Sparkasse Monheim and the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf merged and since then have operated under the uniform name of "Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf".

Social Commitment

As a public law institute, the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf works in a public interest. It supports the citizens of the city of Düsseldorf in the social field, promotes customs, education and sport as well as cultural life in Düsseldorf. Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf raised a sum of 3.2 million euros in 2014 for this commitment.

The Stadtsparkasse maintains several foundations.

The art and culture foundation of the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf was founded in 2000 on the occasion of its 175th anniversary. Until 2014, the Art and Culture Foundation had supported almost 230 projects with a total of 2.2 million euros.

The Monheim Foundation was founded in 2002 and is dedicated to charitable purposes such as helping young people and the elderly as well as promoting sports and culture. The Ulla Hahn Author Award, which has been awarded every two years since 2012, is also endowed from it.

The Düsseldorf ice rink is also a foundation of the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf. It was founded in 1975 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Stadtsparkasse.

In addition to the various foundations, the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf supports non-profit associations through sponsoring, donations and the PS-purpose income.

The focus of the sponsorship is the promotion of young talent, which was supported with 1.5 million euros in 2014. The donation budget of 300,000 euros went to charitable associations.

The PS-purpose yield is based on the savings bank lottery "PS-Sparen und Win". The customers of Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf buy lots of which 25 cents will be used for the distribution for a good cause. In 2014, 298 projects were supported with a total of around one million euros.

Scandal about Maxfield bankruptcy or Pooth affair

The immediate resignation of two board members of Sparkasse Düsseldorf in March 2008 caused a national sensation. Their board chairman Heinz-Martin Humme and board member Karl-Heinz Stiegemann had given entrepreneur Franjo Pooth , husband of the well-known entertainer Verona Pooth , despite warnings from board circles 9.3 million euros granted, although his company Maxfield was largely in debt. The company is now insolvent.

Franjo Pooth has confessed to having bribed the two board members with high-quality televisions from the luxury brand Bang & Olufsen worth over 9,000 euros; however, he accuses at least one board member of coercing him to do so. After the auditors had found incriminating evidence about the members of the board, the board of directors unanimously decided to terminate them without notice. Despite the allegedly lost million dollar loan, Stiegemann filed a lawsuit against the Sparkasse for the payment of success bonuses in the amount of 105,000 euros. Verona Pooth claimed in an RTL interview that her husband had the talent "to wrap bankers around his fingers". A member of the Sparkasse's board of directors publicly suspected that the loan had been granted too lightly due to the “Verona factor”.

As part of the legal processing of the Pooth affair, the former Düsseldorf Stadtsparkassen board member Karl-Heinz Stiegemann was sentenced by the Düsseldorf Regional Court in July 2011 to pay 454,000 euros to his former employer.
