Michael "Mike" Brown (* 24. March 1954 in Jasper , Indiana ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since January 3, 2019, he has represented the state of Indiana in the US Senate together with Todd Young .

Family, education and work

Mike Braun was born in the small town of Jasper, in southern Indiana. He attended Jasper High School there . He received his bachelor's degree from Wabash College and his master's degree from Harvard Business School . Braun is President and CEO of Meyer Distributing , a trading company.

Braun is married to Maureen and they both have four children. His brother is also active as a politician in Indiana.

Political career

From 2004 to 2014 Braun was a member of the Jasper School Board , the school board of directors in his hometown. He was elected as a candidate and member of the Democratic Party , but in 2012 he joined the Republicans. From 2014 to 2017, he served in the 63rd constituency in the Indiana House of Representatives . On November 1, 2017, he stepped down to focus fully on his election campaign for Indiana’s Senate seat, which is up for election in 2018.

In the Republican primaries, Braun, who was given little chance as an outsider, surprisingly prevailed against his opponents Todd Rokita and Luke Messer with 41% of the votes and was thus nominated for the main election on November 6, 2018.

In the election campaign he appeared as a critic of Obamacare and called incumbent Joe Donnelly as a defender of Obamacare . He spoke out in favor of withdrawing the Affordable Care Act and essentially leaving health care to the free market. Braun continued to take the view that the building of the wall to Mexico, which US President Donald Trump had promised in his election campaign, must be the first step towards some solution. He continues to oppose abortion and oppose same-sex marriages.

In the main election on November 6, 2018, Braun was surprisingly able to prevail with 50.9% of the votes cast against Donnelly, for whom 45% voted. Since January 3, 2019, he has replaced Donnelly as Senator. Together with Todd Young he now represents the state of Indiana in the federal senate.
