In 1826, Joseph McDonald and his mother moved from Ohio to Montgomery County , Indiana. When he was twelve years old, he went to work for a saddler in Lafayette . He later attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville before graduating from Asbury University in Greencastle in 1840 . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1843 and worked from 1843 to 1847 as a prosecutor before he settled as a freelance lawyer in Crawfordsville.

His political career began with the election to the House of Representatives of the United States , which he belonged from March 4, 1849 as a representative of the eighth Congressional electoral district of Indiana. After two years, he left the Congress again. In 1856 he was elected Attorney General of Indiana, which he remained after confirmation in office until 1860.
