Elijah V. Brookshire

Elijah Voorhees Brookshire (born August 15, 1856 in Ladoga , Montgomery County , Indiana , †  April 14, 1936 in Seattle , Washington ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1895 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elijah Brookshire attended schools in his homeland and Central Indiana Normal College , which he graduated from in 1878. Between 1879 and 1882 he worked as a teacher in Montgomery County. He was also involved in agriculture. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1883, he began practicing this profession in Crawfordsville . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1888 Brookshire was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded James T. Johnston on March 4, 1889 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Brookshire returned to working as a lawyer. From 1894 he was also admitted to the United States Supreme Court in this capacity . In 1925, Brookshire retired. Between 1925 and 1935 he lived in Los Angeles . He then moved to Seattle, where he died on April 14, 1936. Elijah Brookshire found his final resting place in Harshbarger Cemetery near his native Ladoga.
