James Richard "Jim" Baird (* 4. June 1945 in Covington , Fountain County , Indiana ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since January 3, 2019, he has represented the 4th Congressional constituency of the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Baird was born in Covington. He grew up there too. After attending high school , he studied at Purdue University , where he received both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree . He also received a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky.

After graduating, he moved in 1969 to the Military Academy of the US Army in Fort Benning . He was assigned to the infantry and should be used in the Vietnam War . However, since the US was withdrawing infantry from Vietnam by the time Baird had completed his training, he was instead assigned to the 523rd Transport Company. This company was used on the most dangerous supply routes. They were ambushed during a delivery. In the ensuing fight on March 12, 1971, Baird lost his left arm. He was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts for his bravery . He last held the rank of First Lieutenant and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1971.

He then returned to his home state and worked as a farmer there.

Baird has three children with his wife Denis. You live in Greencastle .

Political career

Baird is a member of the Republican Party. In 2006 he took over a public office for the first time, he sat on the Commission of Putnam County . In 2010 he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives.

After Todd Rokita announced that he would run for the Republican nomination for the Indiana seat in the 2018 Senate primaries , Baird announced that he would run for the Republican nomination for Rokita's vacant seat in the primary. Baird was able to prevail. He decided the main election on November 6, 2018 with 64.1% of the votes against the democrat Tobi Beck. He then stepped down from the Indiana House of Representatives on November 20, 2018. Baird was sworn in on January 3, 2019 and has since represented Indiana’s 4th Congressional constituency in the US House of Representatives.
