William O. Barnard

William Oscar Barnard (born October 25, 1852 in Liberty , Union County , Indiana , †  April 8, 1939 in New Castle , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1909 and 1911 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1854, William Barnard came to Dublin , Wayne County, with his parents . In 1856 the family moved to Fayette County and in 1866 to Henry County where he attended public schools. He also graduated from the Spiceland Academy . Barnard then worked as a teacher for five years. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1876, he began to practice as a lawyer. Between 1887 and 1893 he was a public prosecutor in the 18th and 53rd judicial districts of his home state. From 1896 to 1902 he was a judge in the 53rd district.

Politically, Barnard was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1908 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded James Eli Watson on March 4, 1909 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Finly H. Gray in 1910 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1911 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, William Barnard worked as a lawyer in New Castle. He died there on April 8, 1939.
